Chi-Square Distribution Table

Critical values of χ² by degrees of freedom, right-tail areas from 0.999 to 0.001.

How to use this table

Read down to your degrees of freedom, then across to the right-tail area. Reject H₀ if your χ² statistic exceeds the value. Example: a 3×3 test of independence has d.f. = (3−1)(3−1) = 4; at α = 0.05 the critical value is 9.488. For a left-tailed question use the complementary column — 0.95 marks the point with 5% of the area below it.

Twelve tail areas including 0.999 and 0.001, and d.f. to 100.

How these values were produced

Regularised incomplete gamma function (SciPy 1.17), cross-checked at 30 significant digits with mpmath.

Every one of these 468 values was computed from the underlying distribution — none was transcribed from a printed table. Values of this kind are mathematical facts: they come out the same for anyone who computes them correctly.

Need the test run rather than the critical value looked up? The Proof Workbench computes t, r, χ² and ANOVA in your browser with assumption checks and a re-verifiable receipt.
